September 30
Today
was a free day to do whatever we wanted so Elissa and I decided to go scuba
diving! She just got her certification this summer so I was thrilled to find
out that I have a diving buddy on the trip. After working out in the morning, a
car picked us up and took us to another hotel 20 minutes away; where the dive
site is (Kerveli Village). We met the instructor and a couple who we were
diving with. The woman was from Holland and her husband was originally from
Canada. This was her 90th dive! I hope I will still be able to dive
at her age (around 60).
We
got ready and put everything on the rib boat (a giant dinghy). We boated about
10-15 minutes to a little alcove called Fat Mountain. Here I did my first lean
back water entrance; I like it better than the giant leap one. The water was so
clear and visibility was perfect. There was not too much sea life, but we did
see some eels and feather worms. I loved tickling them and seeing them shoot
back into their tube. I brought my go pro down with me, so I got a lot of
awesome videos. We stayed down for about an hour and I only used 100 psi. I am
surprised at how little oxygen I used. We got back on the boat for an hour of
lunch to be followed by another 45 minute dive at Small Laka. We saw another
eel and some more fish, but this time we went down even deeper to about 21
meters. It felt so great to dive again! We cleaned everything up and got a ride
back to our hotel. Elissa and I forgot how exhausting diving is so when we got
back to the hotel, we laid out by the pool. We were eventually joined by the
rest of the abroad who went to beaches or bike rides for their free day. Then a
few girls and I walked into town and ate at one of the restaurants by the sea.
Now we are back at the hotel looking at pictures from the abroad and watching a
movie. What a wonderful day off!
