Last night we had dinner on the rooftop in Istanbul (5 stories hight). The view from my seat was of the Blue Mosque, and behind me was of the sea. It was so incredibly beautiful and the food was delicious. I had a chicken kabob. Later that night 4 of us explored Istanbul. We tried our hand at bargaining, ate turkish delight, and made friends. We also made furry friends. There are stray cats and dogs everywhere here.
Today we went to the Blue Mosque, Haya Sophia, and little Haya Sophia. These mosques are absolutely beautiful, and slowly but surely my drawing skills are improving. When entering the mosques we had to make sure our heads were covered with a scarf as well as our whole body down to our ankles covered. We also had to take off our shoes. While drawing in the mosques everyone comes up to you and looks at your drawing or takes pictures with you. I met a girl named Rena who is a teacher. She is from London and is muslim. She is traveling many places this summer and gave me her email address so that I could contact her and her friends to tell us of some cool places to visit in Greece. The call to prayer which rings throughout the city to tell of the times to pray rings 5 times a day. Tonight we also had dinner on a rooftop. Just about every restaurant in Istanbul is at least two stories. After dinner we went to a rug store. They gave a presentation and apple tea, which is amazing, and proceeded to sell us rugs. They were all beautiful, but none spoke to me. It was another great day of exploring the city. We have done so much already that I feel like I have been here for a week.
