Church Day

September 29
Today the group went to a Greek church to do some drawing and painting. The tradition of burying loved ones is a very unique process. First, they bury the body and then 5-6 years later, the family unburies the body and puts the bones in a box, which is put into a storage room next to the graveyard. The grave is then used for someone else. If the bones that are dug up are white then it is said that the person is going to heaven, and if the bones are black then the person is going to hell. The gravesite was very small, but I wonder how many people have been in one single grave, as the storage area was filled with boxes.
Unfortunately the church was locked so we could not go in, but there was plenty to see outside. I walked up to this ruin area and sat on the cliff, which overlooked the ocean. I found my peaceful place within the church area and sat there for about an hour. At around 4:30 we headed back up the hill to go swimming and have dinner at the hotel. We had yummy spaghetti and the ladies who run the hotel took very good care of us as always.
